Course Title: BIOTECHNOLOGY
BIOTECHNOLOGY AS A COURSE.
Biotechnology is a scientific field that deals with the use of living organisms to make new useful products(food and medicine).
A Hungarian agricultural engineer Károly Ereky, the father of biotechnology, in the year 1919 coined the term biotechnology.
people discovered the usefulness of one-celled organisms which includes; yeasts and bacteria. In Mesopotamia, people used bacteria to convert wine into vinegar.
WHY STUDY BIOTECHNOLOGY?
1. Genetic analysis in animals so that human diseases can be modeled and studied can be learnt in biotechnology.
2. Biotechnology is a broad field in science that comprises of basic and an applied science.
3. Apart from being a broad field of study, it is also a highly paid job.
4. Graduates has a lot of career prospects to choose from, like working in research laboratories, professional careers in health science.
DUTIES OF A BIO TECHNOLOGIST.
1. Biotechnologists, are involved in the creation and improvement of products and processes for agriculture, medicine and conservation using biological organisms.
2. Biotechnologists study the genetic, chemical and physical attributes of cells, tissues and organisms, and give the industrial benefits of these products.
3. They make reports on the developments of projects.
4. They make researches on micro organisms.
JOB OPPORTUNITIES FOR A GRADUATE OF BIOTECHNOLOGY.
1. Biomedical Engineer.
3. Medical Scientist.
4. Biological/Clinical Technician.
6. Process Development Scientist.
7. Biomanufacturing Specialists.
8. Business Development Manager.
COURSES RELATED TO BIOTECHNOLOGY INCLUDES;
3. Research design.
Subject Combination for JAMB
Here are the courses to combine when filling this course for JAMB UTME
Course Cut of Point
is the minimum cut off point for BIOTECHNOLOGY as specified by JAMB.
Also, the required cut-of-points for this course (BIOTECHNOLOGY) depends on the school you are applying for, basically many schools have a different minimum cut of marks for accepting students in this area, which may be higher or even lower than JAMB recommend. Also, it is important to note that your O'level result (WAEC, NECO, GCE etc) is a primary criteria for screening, continue reading to know the required subjects you must have on your O'Level result
