FG Considering GCE as Replacement for WAEC
On Thursday, 23rd of July, during the Presidential task Force (PTF) briefing on Covid-19 in Abuja, the Federal Government through the Minister of State for Education, Emeka Nwajiuba, said that SS3 students may have to sit for the General Certificate Examoinations (GCE) in November if there isn't a shift in the timetable of the West African Examination Council (WAEC).
According to Mr. Nwajiuba, if the government cannot convince WAEC to shift its examinations, the only option Nigerian students may have will be to sit for the GCE exams. He went on to say that, in the event that Nigeria finally meets upwith the WAEC timetable, subjects like Hausa, Yoruba , and Igbo will have to be moved behind to create space for writing of general subjects with other participating countries.
Also, he stated that the government would meet with stakeholders again on July 30, to review the preparations, guidelines, and provisions put in place for safe reopening of schools.
