The advent of the Coal City University could be traced to the proactive reaction, ingenuity and resourcefulness of committed compatriots to Government’s invitation to the private sector to participate in providing functional education. It has been realized that education in Nigeria has suffered under what Borishade (2002) as Honourable Minster of Education described as ‘the eternal triangle of education,‘ namely: access, quality and cost, as he put it while addressing the private sector roundtable on ‘Education for All’ organised by the UNESCO. This call for educational transformation was harkened to by a group of progressives led by the late genius and an intellectual icon Very Reverend Father Professor Stan Chinedu Nkemegbunam Anih (Eze-udo of Ojebe Ogene clan) in Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State, Nigeria. A colossus who joined forces with like minds (Master-minds in his usual way of expression) to kick-start what is today known as Coal City University. They include HRM Igwe Justice (rtd) Ezebuilo Ozobu, HRH Igwe Hon. Dr. Benjamin Chukwuemeka Nnachetam, Dr. Sylvester Emeka lgwe, Professor Charles Anikweze, Barr. (Mrs) Chikodi Madu, Ambassador Ogbonnaya Aja-nwachukwu and Chief (Mrs) Felicia Anih among others. These gentlemen and ladies became the pioneering members of the Board of Trustees of the then proposed university and were regarded as promoters. The idea of Coal City University (then called African Thinkers University) was muted in March 2003. This idea culminated into proactive structural and infrastructural development and face lifting at a landed property then known as No. 1 AICCACCOI close, off Ihiala Street, Independence Layout, Enugu which was to become the take-off campus of the university, with permanent site at Ukana Town in Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State. Following this development, a bill to establish African Thinkers University Enugu, was presented to the Enugu State House of Assembly as sponsored by Hon. David Atigwe in August 2003. Public hearing on the Bill was subsequently presented by the House of Assembly after which the Bill to establish African Thinkers University Enugu was signed into Law in Enugu State by the then Executive Governor Dr. Chimaroke Nnamani. With an existing College of Education, the promoters in 2004 applied in and completed application forms from the National Universities Commission to establish a private Univetisty-Coal City University to be established in Enugu, Enugu State. The University attracted three verification and two confirmation visits of the Standing Committee on Private Universities (SCOPU) of the National Universities Commission (NUC). It is worthy of note that the 2013 SCOPU visit eventually led to the relocation of the take-off site to the present KM3 Enugu-Abakaliki express-way Emene, Enugu which was then almost a virgin land. This period saw a tremendous structural and infrastructural development in the new take-off site under the leadership of Hon. Sir Chinedu Ani. On the 22nd day of November all efforts and visitations paid off with the approval of the Coal City University, Enugu alongside seven other private universities by the Federal Government of Nigeria. This joy was later crowned with the issuance of the provisional License to operate as a private university. The Coal City University, Enugu has indeed taken off with academic activities in two faculties - Faculty of Arts, Social and Management Sciences, and Faculty of Natural and Applied Sciences, with ten departments and fifteen programmes.
