The decision to establish an Advanced Teachings’ College (ATC), as it was called at Katsina-Ala was taken by the government of the defunct Benue-Plateau state headed by the Late Mr .J.D Gomwalk. Though financial provision was made for this in the 1975/76 estimates, and in the five-year development plan, no practical steps were taken to implement this decision. In January, 1976, Mr. D. O Idah was appointed principal with instructions to commence whatever arrangements necessary to get the college started by September, 1976, on a temporary site either in Makurdi, Jos or Otukpo. In the same year however, more states were created, and Benue State was carved out of Benue Plateau with Abdullahi Shelleng as the governor the State and the immediate emphasis was on the setting-up of the nhe intake of 530 students, students’ population has grown appreciably now to 10000. From 1976-2016, the college has produce 86 B.Ed graduate, 36, 117 NCE graduates, 891 ACE graduates, and 12 TTC graduates and 382 PDE graduates. The staff strength now stands at 631. It a thing of dismay that the B.Ed programme, which was launched during the 1982/83 academic sessions in affiliation with University of Jos, graduated only two sets totaling 86 graduates and was stopped on the orders of the Federal Government. However in the 2014/15 Academic Session the college restarted the B.Ed programme, this time in affiliation with the University of Calabar. Ten (10) programme options are available for the programme.ew administrative machinery in Makurdi. Consequently a decision was taken to start the college on temporary site at Katsina-Ala. The present temporary site was acquired from the Local School Board (LSB) which had earmarked it for the construction of another primary School in Katsina-Ala town. Semi-permanent primary-School type structures were hurriedly erected and re-modeled, and the first batch of 530 students arrived on the 15th November, 1976 to offer twenty subject combination. Since then, the academic and students enrolment have been on the increase year in year out. At present, there are five academic schools, thirty one academic Departments and a preliminary programme. There is a Division of continuing Education, which handles the NCE part-time programme for both serving Grade II teachers and other interested members who might not have time for full time studies. It was not until 1984 that the college was established by law following enactment of edit No. 20 of 1984 The Early childhood care education programme is the newest in our academic programme. The college has a computer science Education Department and attaches great importance to this programme and computer have also found their way in to many homes. College of Education Katsina-Ala has therefore this challenges to provide literacy and knowledge of computer Technological development of citizens.
